The customer approached Resin Floors Telford to install a new floor at their Midlands Pharmaceutical Facility. The client required a single flooring specification which could be used throughout the facility. The floor needed to be suitable for wash-down areas, fridges and heated rooms. The floor also required a high clinical finish, with it being a pharmaceutical environment but still able to withstand heavy foot traffic and wheeled trolleys.

During the refurbishment of the building, 30 rooms were built. Resin Floors Telford had to plan the works around the schedules of the other trades onsite. This involved meeting with the trades and clients to ensure areas and rooms were available for the flooring installation. During the first two weeks, Resin Floors Telford removed the old brittle screed across the site to minimise disturbances. Each area was then re-prepared, roughly split into 4 phases allowing other trades to carry on and allow continuity of work throughout the project.

As a Pharmaceutical Facility, the final floor finish needed to be hygienic, heavy-duty, and durable. Resin Floors Telford worked with Arturo to specify a suitable resin floor to cope with such demands and produce a seamless finish. The Arturo PU floor specified also had the benefit of being sustainable as Arturo’s range of polyurethane resins are made from castor oils from the Ricinus plant. Therefore, 85% of the ingredients for Arturo PU resins are obtained from natural, plant-based raw materials.

The new 3500 square metre floor was installed across 30 rooms by Resin Floors Telford in stages. Some areas of the screed were weak and brittle, so Resin Floors Telford had to prepare the floor ready for the application of resin by grinding the screed using heavy grinding machinery and industrial vacuum cleaners to keep dust to a minimum. The drainage system had been retrofitted, meaning Resin Floors Telford carried out repairs using a reinforced fibreglass mesh.

Resin Floors Telford then applied Arturo EP6500 epoxy primer followed by Arturo EP6200 Scratch Coat. A grey-coloured Arturo PU2060 self-smoothing floor was then used to act as a further crack-bridging layer in most rooms, whilst a red coat of Arturo PU2060 was applied in other rooms and corridors. Finally, a coat of Arturo EP7610, a water vapour permeable, transparent epoxy sealer, was used to provide extra wear and scratch resistance and produce a different matt surface finish.

The new floors at Midlands Pharmaceutical Facility met the clients brief. The high-quality floor finish is hygienic and durable to ensure its longevity. The seamless Arturo resin floor is effortless to clean and maintain due to the floor's inherent properties. The facility has received Good Manufacturing Practice registration from the UK's Medicine and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA). This is a testament to the quality of the materials and work completed on this project by Resin Floors Telford's highly qualified team of professionals.
