Beer brewing can now be enjoyed to the full in the Commanderieplein in Ootmarsum, next to the Open-air Museum. This is not only in the new traditional Othmar beer brewery, but also in Gasterij Oatmössche set up around the brewing kettles. Not only were the aesthetics of the authentic Belgian and German brewhouses a consideration in the design of both buildings, attention was also devoted to (food) safety and a maximum of convenience. And this right down to the floors.

Ceramic tiles in combination with self-smoothing floors were chosen to complete the work in style, explains Bart Nijhuis, co-owner of the brewery. “Fully impermeable, anti-slip, simple to clean and compliant with HACCP standards for food safety. And with an authentic ambience to boot. We gained inspiration at the UZIN UTZ Nederland factory in Haaksbergen, where besides Arturo self-smoothing floors Codex tile adhesives and joint sealing compounds are also produced. These were both utilised in this project.”

Chemical-resistant and anti-slip
“The monolithic concrete surface in the brewery is was provided with a  polyurethane Arturo PU2060 Self-smoothing Floor”, explains Bas Bloemen, Technical Commercial Adviser at Arturo.  This self-smoothing floor was then finished with a light grey 2-component Arturo PU3320 Sealer, followed by a transparent, 1-component Arturo PU7975 Sealer. “ “Besides being chemical-resistant, thanks to the addition of small granules it also has an anti-slip function to avoid nasty slips. On top of the sand and cement floor in the museum, where the old copper kettles are found, we applied the Arturo EP1200 Resin Screed with Arturo EP7950 Sealer to make the floor fully impermeable. The resin screed floor was laid at a gradient, so liquids and cleaning water always flow to the drain for easy cleaning of the floor. A transparent epoxy mixed with sand, gravel and grains ensures a special, authentic appearance.” In the storage space above, the choice was made for an epoxy EP2500 Self-smoothing Floor, explains Enrico Nieuwenhuis, Commercial Technical Director at floor layer Westendorp Scholten. “This extra hard self-smoothing floor was required because the loads here are many times heavier. The epoxy self-smoothing floor provides the perfect answer.”

Nieuwenhuis reflects on a successful, but also challenging project. This was because the planning was shifted at the very last moment. “It not only required the necessary flexibility and creativity of our floor layers, but also from Arturo that had to manufacture its products more quickly.” Laying did then take place by the book, he explains. “This was because we are familiar with the Arturo products with which we carry out at least eighty percent of our work. Our end customer was again highly satisfied with the result.”

Authentic and simple to clean
André Groeneveld, owner of tiling company André Groeneveld also looks back at a successful project. His company laid some 1,200 m² of ceramic floor and wall tiles, including  the catering area, the kitchen, the brewery, the bottle space and the toilet areas at the Othmar beer brewery. “This was because ceramic tiles are not only extremely durable, they are also very easy to clean thoroughly”, he continues. “And all this without losing their quality and ambience. We also used Codex tile adhesive and joint sealing compounds.”

A Codex Epo Tix two-part epoxy joint mortar was used in the kitchen where a lot of cleaning goes on with cleaning products. This joint mortar resists chemical cleaning products and always retains its colour/qualities, explains Martin Gerritzen, Technical Commercial Adviser at Codex. “And this both on the floor and on the walls. In the other spaces the choice was made for a Codex Flex Basic/Codex Color Xtra synthetic resin high-grade cement joint mortar.”

Before the tiles were laid, the cement covering floor was given a Codex FG 300 dispersion primer layer for absorbent surfaces, he explains. “Then the floor was finished with Codex Power CX 3; a stable, very creamy and flexible thin-bed mortar with which the tiles were adhered. The buttering/floating method (double adhesion) was used for the large tiles for optimal adhesion.”

No unknowns
“We were already involved with the project at a very early stage thanks to adviser BBD Bouwmanagement B.V. in Oldenzaal and construction contractor  Niehof B.V. in Lattrop, that also built our premises in Haaksbergen”, explains Gerritzen. “Both companies are very familiar with the UZIN UTZ Nederland range, which includes both Codex and Arturo. The Heupink family, owner of the Othmar beer brewery, is also familiar. Our products were indeed also used in their former brewery. The fact that we were also called upon for the new building is an enormous compliment.”
